Description/Symbolism

Obverse Description. On a bronze metal device 1 ¾ inches (4.45 cm) in height and 1 11/16 inches (4.29cm) wide, hanging by a small round orb, a four pointed beveled star bound by two intertwining wrapped laurel branches originating from the base hugging the inner core of the star, surmounted overall by an American eagle displayed and supporting an image of the POW/MIA flag, in his dexter talons an olive branch and in his sinister talons 13 arrows.

Obverse Symbolism. The American bald eagle displayed holding an olive branch and 13 arrows is a national symbol.    

Reverse Description.  On a four pointed beveled star, between two intertwining wrapped laurel branches originating from the base hugging the inner core of the star, a circular disc with the words inscribed, “FOR CIVILIAN ACHEIVEMENT” centered above a of a spray of laurel leaves and arching above is inscribed, “DEFENSE POW/MIA ACCOUNTING AGENCY”, above all is a folded American flag showing five stars.

Reverse Symbolism. The triangle with stars represents a folded American flag.

Ribbon. The ribbon is Scarlet, Bluebird, White, Black, and Ultramarine Blue. Scarlet represents the blood of those lost on past recovery missions. Bluebird is representative of DoD and DPAA is a DoD agency. White symbolizes honor and integrity in which the mission is accomplished. Black alludes to the solemn nature of the agency’s mission. Blue is symbolic of Achievement.
